Do I actually need the ToyControl helper app
The ToyControl helper app is optional and only needed for VR. Here is exactly what works without it and what does not.
ToyControl has an optional helper app. New users often assume they need it. Most do not. Here is the honest rundown.
The short answer
You need the helper app only if you want to use ToyControl with VR. That means a VR headset, or VR games. For everything else, ToyControl runs entirely in your browser and the helper is not involved.
What works without the helper
All of this is browser-only, with no download:
- Pairing a Bluetooth toy.
- Script Player, playing funscripts with a video.
- Video Player.
- Patterns.
- Broadcast and Music sync.
- Remote Control rooms with a partner.
If that covers your whole use of ToyControl, skip the helper entirely.
What needs the helper
Two features, both about VR:
- Connect to VR. Driving your toy from a VR scene playing on a headset through HereSphere.
- Game Link. Letting a VR game on your computer drive the toy.
Browsers are not allowed to open the kind of network connections those two need. The helper app is a small bridge that does only that.
What the helper is not
It is not an app-store app. It is a small download, around 8 MB, that runs quietly in your system tray. It has no account, sends no data outside your home network, and you can quit it any time. See the full picture in The ToyControl helper app.
Decide in one line
If you use a VR headset or VR games with your toy, install the helper. If you do not, you will never need it. A plain Bluetooth toy like a Lovense Lush works in the browser with nothing extra.
