Sharing a toy between partners safely

A few sensible rules for sharing an interactive toy without sharing infections. What to clean, what to replace, and when one-toy-per-person is the right call.

If you and a partner share an interactive toy, the same hygiene rules apply as any shared sex toy. A few quick rules below cover most cases.

The non-negotiable rules

What "clean between users" actually means

If the toy is body-safe silicone or ABS plastic (every reputable interactive toy on the market):

  1. Rinse under warm water for at least 30 seconds.
  2. Wash with mild unscented soap or a dedicated toy cleaner.
  3. Rinse thoroughly.
  4. Pat dry with a clean towel.

For a deeper clean between users:

  1. The above.
  2. Plus a wipe with 70% isopropyl alcohol (silicone only; check your toy's manual).
  3. Plus a final rinse.

This is enough for most everyday cases. For users with active infections (or recently treated ones), use the one-toy-per-person approach below.

When to use one toy per person

A few situations:

In all these cases, two toys is the safer answer.

Condoms on toys

A condom on a toy gives you a disposable barrier that can be swapped instantly. Useful when:

Non-latex condoms are kinder to silicone toys long-term. Latex is fine for occasional use.

Couples in the same room

If you and your partner share an interactive toy in person and trust each other's status:

See Couples in the same room for shared-session ideas.

Long-distance couples

If you and your partner are not physically together, you do not share the toy. Each of you has your own toy, paired with your own ToyControl. The Remote Control rooms feature lets one of you drive the other's toy.

See Long-distance couples and ToyControl.

This avoids the hygiene question entirely.

Group play

Multi-person rooms (more than two people in ToyControl) are a real scenario, especially in public rooms. The rules are the same: each person has their own toy on their own end. Nobody is physically sharing.

For physical group play (three or more people in the same room), follow the same one-toy-per-person guidance. The math just gets bigger.

Replacing a toy

If a toy gets used hard, replace it sooner than you might think:

For shared toys, halve those numbers.
