Why ToyControl uses a small helper app instead of an app store app

ToyControl runs in your browser, with a tiny optional helper for VR. Here is why it is built that way and not as an app store download.

ToyControl is a website. The only thing you might download is a small helper app, and only for VR. People sometimes ask why it is not just an app in the App Store or the Play Store. Here is the reasoning.

App stores and adult content

App stores are strict about adult content. An interactive-toy app faces review delays, content rules, and the risk of being pulled without notice. Building ToyControl as a website sidesteps all of that. A website has no gatekeeper deciding whether adults can use it.

No install for most people

Because ToyControl runs in a browser, most users need nothing. You open the site, pair a toy, and you are going. There is no download, no install, no update to chase. That is a real advantage, not a compromise.

What the helper app actually is

Two things genuinely cannot be done from inside a browser: connecting to a VR headset, and listening for VR games on your computer. The helper app is a small bridge for exactly those two jobs and nothing else. It is around 8 MB, runs in your system tray, has no account, and sends no data outside your home network. It is not a full application, and it is not in any store. See Do I actually need the ToyControl helper app.

The trade-off, honestly

Browser-first is a deliberate choice with one real cost: ToyControl does not work on iPhone or iPad, because Apple's browser does not support talking to Bluetooth toys. See Why ToyControl is not on the App Store.

For everyone on a desktop or an Android device, the browser approach means less friction and no app-store gate. With a Bluetooth toy like a Lovense Lush, the website is the whole product, and the small helper download only enters the picture if you add VR.
