How a WiFi sex toy actually connects

A WiFi toy does not talk to your browser directly. Here is the path a command really takes, and what it means for setup and privacy.

"WiFi toy" sounds like the toy and your computer simply talk over WiFi. The reality is a little longer than that, and it is worth understanding before you buy one.

What a WiFi toy really does

A WiFi toy joins your home network the same way a phone or a laptop does. But your browser cannot reach a device sitting on your home network directly. So a WiFi toy does not wait for your browser to call it. Instead it calls out.

The path a command takes looks like this:

  1. ToyControl in your browser sends the command.
  2. It travels out to the toy maker's online service.
  3. The service passes it to the toy.
  4. The toy moves.

The toy is reachable because it stays checked in with the maker's service. That is the trick that makes "WiFi" work, and it is also the catch.

The Handy, the main example

The Handy is the WiFi toy most ToyControl users will meet. It connects to your home WiFi during setup, using The Handy's own app or setup page, and from then on it stays in touch with The Handy's online service. ToyControl drives it by talking to that service.

ToyControl's WiFi support for The Handy is in active development. Check it is working in your build before buying one mainly for ToyControl.

What this means for setup

What this means for privacy

Because commands pass through the maker's online service, a WiFi toy session is not purely local. The maker's servers handle the traffic. This is not unsafe, the makers of these toys are used to handling it, but it is a real difference from a Bluetooth toy, where the connection never leaves the room.

If keeping everything local matters to you, see Bluetooth vs WiFi sex toys and Cloud-controlled vs local-network toy control. For ToyControl's own privacy posture, see How private is ToyControl really.
