Bluetooth vs WiFi sex toys, which one is right for you

Interactive toys connect one of two ways, Bluetooth or WiFi. The choice changes range, latency, setup, and privacy. Here is how to pick before you buy.

Almost every interactive toy connects to your computer one of two ways: Bluetooth or WiFi. Neither is better, they are different trade-offs. This article explains both so you can choose before you spend any money.

The short answer

For most people, Bluetooth. It covers nearly every interactive toy, needs no internet for the toy connection itself, and is simple to set up. WiFi is worth choosing if Bluetooth range is a problem in your home, or if the toy you want (mainly The Handy) is WiFi-only.

How Bluetooth toys work

A Bluetooth toy talks straight to your computer over a short-range radio link. Nothing goes through the internet to move the toy. ToyControl pairs the toy in your browser, and from then on the commands travel a few meters of air and nothing more.

How WiFi toys work

A WiFi toy joins your home network like a phone. It does not talk to your browser directly. Instead it reaches the toy maker's online service, which passes commands back to ToyControl. The Handy is the main WiFi toy people use with ToyControl.

Strengths:

Trade-offs:

Latency

On a modern laptop, both feel responsive. Bluetooth is a direct link, so it usually has a slight edge. WiFi adds one hop out to the maker's service and back, which can add a little delay on a slow connection. For most sessions the difference is not noticeable.

Privacy

This is the clearest split. A Bluetooth toy connection never touches the internet. A WiFi toy routes its commands through the maker's online service. Neither is unsafe, but if "nothing about my session leaves this room" matters to you, Bluetooth is the cleaner answer. See Cloud-controlled vs local-network toy control.
