Vibrators vs strokers, which one for what

Vibrators do intensity. Strokers do motion. Which one fits what kind of content, and which is right for your first interactive toy.

Interactive toys come in two main shapes: vibrators (small motors that buzz at varying speeds) and strokers (devices that move a sleeve up and down). Both can take instructions from a script or an app. The instructions are slightly different, and so is the feel. This article covers when each one fits.

What each kind does

A vibrator has a motor that turns at variable speed. The script or app sends an intensity number (0-100), and the motor spins at that speed.

A stroker has a moving part (often a sleeve) that goes up and down a shaft. The script or app sends a position (0-100, where 0 is one end and 100 is the other). The sleeve moves to that position.

These are fundamentally different physical actions. A vibrator buzzes; a stroker strokes. They feel different even with the same script playing.

How the same script feels on each

Most interactive scripts are written for strokers. They describe a position over time: "be at 80 here, move to 20 by the next moment, then back up to 90." On a stroker, this is exactly what you feel.

On a vibrator, ToyControl translates these positions into intensity. High positions become strong vibration; low positions become gentle vibration. The timing matches the script, but the sensation is buzz-strong-and-buzz-weak instead of move-up-and-move-down.

This is not a bad fit. It works. But it is different.

Which kind for which content

Cost differences

Strokers are bigger investments because they involve moving parts and motors that handle force. Vibrators are simpler.

If you are uncertain, start with a vibrator. It is cheaper and more general-purpose. Move up to a stroker once you know you want the experience that strokers offer.

Setup differences

Strokers also produce more noise (motor + mechanical action).

Comfort differences

For long-distance couples, a wearable vibrator is the natural fit. For solo VR sessions, a stroker is the natural fit. Many users own both.

What about machines

Fucking machines (the Hismith Premium and Pro Traveler) are a third category. They are strokers, technically, but bigger and mains-powered. They suit long sessions where the rhythm is steady rather than scripts with rapid changes. See Picking a fucking machine.
