How to play scripts on Meta Quest
Connect your Meta Quest to ToyControl through the helper app and let HereSphere drive your toy with VR scenes. Five-minute setup.
Playing scripts on a Meta Quest takes about five minutes once you have the pieces in place. You connect your Quest to your computer over your home Wi-Fi, ToyControl sees what HereSphere is playing, and your toy follows along.
This article is the full setup. For the conceptual overview, see Connect to VR.
Preflight checklist
Before you start, make sure all of these are true:
- Quest and computer are on the same Wi-Fi network (not guest, not the other band).
- The helper app is installed and running on your computer (icon visible in menu bar or system tray).
- HereSphere is installed on your Quest.
- ToyControl is open in Chrome or Edge on your computer.
- A toy is paired with ToyControl (green dot in the sidebar).
- A script is loaded in your library that matches the video you want to play.
If any of those are missing, fix them first:
- How to install the ToyControl helper app
- How to pair your first toy
- How to load a script into ToyControl
Step 1: Find your Quest's IP address
- Put on your Quest.
- Open HereSphere.
- Go to the settings menu inside HereSphere.
- Look for a setting that shows the headset's IP address (it will be a number like
192.168.1.42). - Write it down or remember the last two numbers.
If you cannot find the IP inside HereSphere, the Quest's IP is also shown in the Wi-Fi settings on the headset itself: hold down the Wi-Fi network you are connected to and tap the info icon.
Step 2: Connect ToyControl to your Quest
- On your computer, open toycontrol.app.
- Make sure the helper app icon is visible in your menu bar or system tray.
- In ToyControl, click Connect to VR in the sidebar.
- Type the Quest's IP address into the field.
- Click Connect.
If you do not know the IP, click Scan instead. ToyControl will sweep your network and find Quests automatically. This takes ten seconds or so.
Once connected, you should see "Connected" or a green status indicator on the Connect to VR panel.
Step 3: Load a video on the Quest
- In HereSphere, browse to a video. Either a video stored on the headset or one streamed from a service like SLR.
- Hit play.
If ToyControl has a script in your library with the same filename as the video, it auto-loads. You will see the script name in the Script Player tab.
If the video and script have different filenames, manually load the script in ToyControl's Script Player.
Step 4: Play
Once the video and the script are both ready, hit play in HereSphere. The toy follows. That is the whole flow.
If the sync is a little off
This is normal for many videos. The script was made for one specific cut, and your copy may be a different one. Use Set First Cue to fix it.
- With the video playing on the Quest, watch the screen.
- The instant you see the first action, press C on your computer keyboard (ToyControl's Script Player handles the keyboard shortcut on the computer side).
- The whole script shifts to match.
See The script and video are not in sync for the full fix.
Troubleshooting
Scan does not find the Quest
The two devices are not on the same Wi-Fi. Walk through this checklist:
- On the Quest, check Settings > Wi-Fi. Note the network name.
- On the computer, check the same. The names must match exactly.
- If your home network has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, put both devices on the same band.
- Many routers have a "guest" network that isolates devices from each other. Make sure neither device is on the guest network.
- If you use a VPN on your computer, turn it off. VPNs often block the local network.
- On Windows, the first time you run the helper app, the firewall asks whether to allow it. Click Allow for both Private and Public networks (or at least Private).
Helper says it is offline
Open the helper app on your computer. The icon should be in the menu bar (Mac) or system tray (Windows). If it is not there, launch it again. The ToyControl sidebar shows a green dot next to the Helper status when the app can see it.
HereSphere does not show an IP
Make sure HereSphere is up to date. Older versions hide the IP under a different menu. Reinstall from the official HereSphere site if needed.
The video plays but the toy is not moving
Three checks:
- Confirm the toy is paired (green dot in the sidebar).
- Confirm the script is loaded (visible in the Script Player tab).
- Click Test toy at the bottom of the screen. If it works, the issue is the script-to-video match. Try loading the script manually.
If Test toy does not work, see My toy connected but it is not moving.
Sync drifts over time
The script and video are different cuts. Find a different version of either the script or the video. Most popular scenes have several script variants for common cuts.
Quest Browser is not the same thing
You cannot run the full ToyControl app inside the Quest's own browser. The toy pairs with your computer via Bluetooth, and the Quest just plays the video. ToyControl on the computer is the brain; the Quest is the display.
